On October 15-16, 2018, the Autumn Hydrobiological Workshops took place at the Nencki Institute Research Station in Mikolajki, which for three years we have been organizing together with the Great Masuria Lakes Foundation for the schools in our region. On October 5th, 2018 the next edition of our largest educational event – Science Festival took placeat the Research Station of the Nencki Institute in Mikołajki. For several years we organizing it together with the Masurian Landscape Park. This year we were visited by as many as 285 primary and high school students from Mikolajki, Woźnice, Dąbrówka, Okartowa, Pisz, Giżycko and even Stare Juch, for whom we prepared the following workshops and lectures: “About words a few”, “Dragonflies and moths of Masurian Park Landscape “,” Winter tracks and traces of animals “,” Zooplankton of Mazurian lakes “,” Rocks and fossils of north-eastern Poland “and “What lives on the coldest continent?”and “Arctic – a land of ice-covered horror”. On September 25th, 2018, we hosted at the Research Station of the Nencki Institute in Mikołajki a group of preschoolers from Giżycko (from the Municipal Kindergarten No. 4), for whom we prepared a lecture on what lives in our lakes and microscopic classes. For the first time, our children’s educational book “Undewater residents of Masurian Lakes”, which Research Station developed and published together with the Masurian Landscape Park, went to our children. On September 22nd, 2018 in the Jan Dembowski Conference Hall had a solemn scientific session connected with giving the new name of the Station in Mikołajki. The session program included lectures on the history, current activities and scientific plans of the Station as well as the 100th anniversary ceremony of the Nencki Institute, unveiling the table with a new name: Research Station of the Nencki Institute in Mikołajki and planting commemorative trees in the square in front of the main building. During the session of prof. Agnieszka Dobrzyń, Director of the Institute, together with Tomasz Janecki PhD, head of the Station, in recognition for many years of cooperation and special services for its development, supporting activities, shaping the image and building a joint success, handed the medals of the 100th anniversary of the Institute. July 30, 2018, Sławomir Piętka MSc, Eng. – specialist in dendrology and dendrometry from the Department of Forestry and Ecology of the Forest, Faculty of Environmental and Agricultural Development of the University of Warmia and Mazury, made a preliminary inspection of the forest area of the Research Station in Mikołajki. He assessed our forest as a “fresh mixed forest” rich with species such as: pine, spruce, larch, juniper, hake, beech, hornbeam, oak, lime, poplar, maple, willow, cherry, alder, birch, walnut, robinia, laurel. He estimated the age of some pines for about 150 years! The purpose of the visit was to explore the possibilities of conducting at the Research Station in Mikołajki didactic classes (engineering works, bachelor’s) and research work in the field of forestry sciences by students and scientists from the UWM Forestry Department.
