On November 23th the first meeting for students of the University of the Third Age of Mikolajki took place at the Hydrobiological Station. Seniors listened to lectures about lakes zooplankton and took an active part in microscopic workshop. The interest and involvement of the audience gave us a high satisfaction. On October 8th, 2016 the ceremony commemorating Jan Igor Rybak was held at the Hydrobioogical Station. Dr Rybak was a head of the Station in 1965-1970, and dedicated his life to the study beloved Mazurian Lakes. His family founded a commemorative plaque and planted an oak in the square on the Green Cottage, then all the guests listened to the memories session, prepared by prof. Jolanta Ejsmont-Karabin. The ceremony was attended by the executives of the Nencki Institute (prof. Adam Szewczyk, prof. Hanna Fabczak, Anna Jachner-Miśkiewicz PhD), employees of the Department of Hydrobiology, University of Warsaw (prof. Joanna Pijanowska, prof. Maciej and Joanna Gliwiczowie, prof. On Saturday, 8th October, the 3th Educational Workshop was organized on the Hydrobiological Station – Mikołajki by the BioCentrum Scientific Education and the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS. Despite the rainy weather about 110 students from high, middle and primary schools from Mikołajki, Mrągowo and Woźnice and participated in this workshop. Young people learned about the secrets of proteins and DNA, unusual properties of catalase, alginine, strach, lactose, red cabbage juis and saw on big screen (in 3D) the planktonic organisms living in the lake Mikołajskie (TJ). On September 23th, we organized together with Mazurian Landscape Park SCIENCE FESTIVAL 2016 in the Hydrobiological Station in Mikolajki. We were visited by 250 young people from high schools, middle schools and primary schools from the entire region (Mikolajki, Mragowo, Pisz, Baranowo, Woznice), for which we have prepared the following lectures: 1. The strangest lakes of the world, 2. Mexico – wild life of land of the Maya 3. Owls – nocturnal hunters, 4. Postglacial landscape of Mazurian Landscape Park, 5. On August 19th 2016 we organized at the Station DAY OF AQUATIC INSECTS. Despite the “neuter” weather we were visited by 25 people (including children), for which we have prepared lectures, films, and field and microscopic classes. The second edition of SUMMER DAYS OF BRAIN was held on July 21st and 22nd on the Hydrobiological Station. During two afternoons our visitors listened to three lectures: “The heart and mind – how and why emotions govern our lives” – Paweł Boguszewski PhD, “In the search for the causes of dyslexia” – Katarzyna Jednoróg PhD, “Omega fatty acids” – prof.
